Still
life painting thrived in Italy
during the early Baroque, yet it remained
historically less respected than "grand
manner" painting of historical,
religious, and mythic subjects.
Still
life came into its own in the new artistic
climate of the Netherlands in the 17th
century (with the name stilleven: still
life is a calque while Romance languages
tend to use terms such as dead nature). |

Still
life painting in Spain,
also called bodegones, was austere;
it differed from the Dutch still parallels,
which often contain both rich banquets
surrounded by ornate and luxurious items
of fabric or glass.
